Canine Assessment & Treatment
Jackson Vet Physio conducts the following Canine assessment and treatment process:
ASSESSMENT

TREATMENT

The following treatment then depends entirely on the individual.
Treatments in the session may include:
-
Massage
-
Myofascial release
-
Stretching
-
Dynamic mobilisations
-
Cold therapy (Cryotherapy)
-
Het therapy
-
Kinesiology taping
I will then put together a home exercise program specifically for your dog. These exercises are for you to carry out at home in-between appointments in order to build strength, range of motion, and correct movement patterns, to maximise the benefits and get more effective results.
In the session, we will go through all the exercises with a full demonstration and explanation for each, as well as seeing how your dog and yourself perform the exercises to ensure everything is understood. The home exercise program is sent across after the session for you to refer back to.
The regularity of appointments will depend entirely on the individual, for most conditions treatment is recommended every 1-2 weeks initially, before spreading out to a maintenance program of 4-6 weeks+ when appropriate.
For some cases, LASER therapy only appointments will take place more frequently than full physiotherapy treatments.
I will also stay in communication with your veterinarian and other paraprofessionals as appropriate.
They can also expect lots of treats, fuss, and cuddles if they are willing!!

Initial Assessment: 1½ Hours
I start by asking a few questions about your dog’s medical history, lifestyle, and home environment, to give me the full picture of their needs, and to give you any home environment advice which could be implemented.
STATIC ASSESSMENT:
Following the history taking, I have a look at your dog statically, this involves looking at their conformation and muscle balance to identify potential/current issues.
MOBILE ASSESSMENT:
I then ask to look at your dog walking and trotting which will involve having a little walk up and down on the lead outside if appropriate, or just within the treatment room. I am looking at how they move within their body, and the way their legs move, as well as identifying any lameness or restrictions.
After this, I will assess the dog’s different tissue states by palpation, as well as identifying any areas of pain or muscular spasm in the musculoskeletal system which need to be targeted.
The assessment finishes by testing their joint ranges of motion.
The assessment is tailored to what they are happy to allow me to do; a lot can be found out just by looking. Especially for those fearful of handling at the vets or in other situations, my aim is not to bring about this same anxiety, their physiotherapy should always be a positive and enjoyable experience.
Follow-up Assessments: 1 Hour
For follow-up appointments please expect a timeframe of 1 hour. In follow-up appointments I will do a similar but briefer assessment to identify changes and improvements following the initial treatment.
